When I speak to my parents (who are living on a fixed income) I realize that for the older generation it’s quite a whammy. With falling interest rates and mounting expenses it sure gets difficult. Service tax on basic medical requirements translates to more expenses. My father recently had to undergo some pathological tests, the service tax they had to pay on a Rs 13350/- bill further burnt a hole in his pocket.
Look at the way cost of living has escalated. Today we not only pay for the actual call made or electricity consumed, we pay a service tax too resulting in added expense. We also pay for premiums paid and what not!
I personally believe that some services need to be out of the scope of service tax. Especially medical services! In a country with poor medical services, where half the population doesn’t have access to medical aid, why should the common man increase his financial burden by paying service tax? And while we pay all these taxes, are we getting the best possible service? Electricity companies quietly keep increasing their per unit price, we pay service tax on top of it, and still have no power!
Read that our Government has brought down excise & service tax rates, which is good news. I wish the Government evaluates the list of services currently under the purview of service tax and really trims the list. Hopefully the new government will do so.
